Return of the Ancients is still work in progress and currently has no planned release date. As of mid 2021, the mod has seven active developers and several other contributors. The add-on was developed by the authors of the original, Unknown Worlds Entertainment studio. On March 1st 2021 the entire mod was rewritten from scratch, due to creation of the new Gargantuan Leviathan model. Below Zero is an expansion to Subnautica, an adventure action game with survival elements. In the following months, the mod has experienced several changes with team members joining and leaving and assets being remade entirely. At this point there were only 4 developers. The mod started development as early as December 6th 2020. Below Zero is set two years after the original Subnautica. It is now available for purchase on Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. The mod is known best for adding the Gargantuan Leviathan (known as the Garg by most people) into the game, which has been a highly requested feature since the original fossil for the creature was introduced. Subnautica: Below Zero is the next chapter in the story of Subnautica. Return of the Ancients is a mod for Subnautica that adds several features to the base game.
